FEU sweeps UST to bag V-League Bronze

Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws continued their mastery over the University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses, overcoming them in straight sets 25-16, 25-23, 25-17 to take the bronze medal in the Shakeys V-League Collegiate Conference at the FilOil Flying V Arena, Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Tamaraws and Golden Tigresses played a tight first set in the early goings, with the Lady Tams relying on Jovelyn Gonzaga, Honey Royce Tubino and Bernadeth Pons to bury the UST squad as UST was unable to catch up to the the Morayta based squad.

In the second set the Golden Tigresses capitalized on the errors of the Lady Tamaraws to erect a 6-2 lead. Gonzaga and Pons were able to put FEU back in the set to cut the lead at 8-5 in the first technical timeout. Afterwards, both teams once again played a tight set with both teams tied at 21. Chloe Cortez delivered a kill to hand UST a 22-21 advantage, but a Golden Tigresses violation allowed the Lady Tams to tie it at 22. Then, Tubino scored with a tip to give FEU 23-22 advantage until UST scored again to tie it at 23 after a net touch violation called against FEU. Luckily for the Lady Tams, Remy Palma unloaded a kill then Cortez committed an attack error to give the Lady Tamaraws a two sets to none lead.

FEU dominated UST all throughout the third set with Gonzaga, Palma and Tubino leading the charge. UST was unable to weather the storm of FEU’s attacks, as the Lady Tamaraws nabbed the 3rd place trophy.

After the game FEU assistant coach Ariel Canlas said the Lady Tamaraws’ third place finish and experiences in the V-League are vital as they prepare for the upcoming UAAP women’s volleyball season on February 2016.

“Morale booster ito dahil dadalhin mo ito hanggang UAAP. Yung experiences na nakuha namin madadala namin dahil maganda tapusin ang liga na mataas ang morale,” Canlas said.

Gonzaga fired 15 points along with nine excellent digs to lead the Lady Tamaraws while Tubino and Pons contributed 12 markers apiece.
