CSB, Perpetual get wins for share of top spot


Last year’s semifinalists De La Salle College of Saint Benilde Lady Blazers and University of Perpetual Help System DALTA Altas dominated their respective opponents to claim their second wins and gain share of the lead with idle San Sebastian College, Thursday at the FilOil Flying V Arena.

In the first game, CSB had trouble against the stubborn Colegio de San Juan de Letran Lady Knights in the first two sets, before unleashing their might in the third. The Lady Blazers pulled off a 25-17, 25-21, 25-8 victory. Letran were able to keep in step with CSB in terms of attacks, 22-37. However, the Lady Blazers punished their opponent’s reception problems and fired 11 aces to pull away in the match. League top scorer Jeanette Panaga registered 16 points for CSB, while fellow stalwart Jannine Navarro scored 14. Elizza Abitan had 7 markers for the Lady Knights.

The Lady Altas followed suit after overpowering the Lady Cardinals, 25-12, 25-21, 25-21. Perpetual used their height and experience against their opponents and dominated all scoring departments: 29-16 on attacks, 8-2 on blocks, and 8-1 on serves. It could have been a blowout in the second and third, if only the Altas had minimized their errors. Both team combined for a whopping 65 errors in a short three-setter. The towering Lourdes Clemente soared highest for the former champions with 14 points, while Jamela Suyat and skipper Ana Diocareza had 10 markers each. Dianne Latayan carried the Lady Cardinals with her 6 points.
