Maica Cortes asserted her might down the stretch of the University of Santo Tomas-Adamson University match to help the Tigresses score a 70-67 win past the Lady Falcons Wednesday in the UAAP Season 78 women’s basketball tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym.

Cortes scored the go-ahead basket under the final two minutes that shoved the Tigresses ahead, 69-67.

She also secured defensive rebounds, protecting the paint against the Lady Falcons; she added a foul shot with only 5.4 seconds left to make it 70-67.

The Tigresses closed the fourth quarter on a strong 13-3 note after trailing by seven halfway in the final frame, to boost its record to 4-1 overall in a tie for second spot with De La Salle University.

The Lady Falcons dropped to 3-2 in solo fourth in the team standings.

After Jhenn Angeles’ basket gave UST a 57-55 lead, Adamson scored 9 unanswered points, mostly drawing them from transition attacks as they defended UST well inside before running the floor well.

A triple by Myra Osano followed by fastbreak layups by Jonalyn Lacson and Ysabelle Diaz gave the Lady Falcons a 64-57 cushion.

But back to back jumpers by Angeles plus baskets by Cortes and Candice Magdaluyo knotted the count at 65-all.

Cortes finished with 13 points and 16 rebounds while Angeles and Misaela Larosa added 15 and 14 points, respectively.

Princess Cochico topscored for Adamson with 21 points, scoring 10 in the third period where she kept her team within striking distance in the second half.
