Codinera expected to get better as Cone invites him to Purefoods practice

Arellano University coach Jerry Codinera will have a better understanding of the triangle offense once he starts to observe Purefoods’ practice sessions.

Purefoods team manager Alvin Patrimonio said they’ve invited the “Defense Minister” to come by and see how the team run things.

“Yun naman ang plan, to have Jerry observe,” said Patrimonio. “At least makakatulong yun para sa team niya sa Arellano.”

Like Tim Cone at Purefoods, Codinera runs the triangle offense for the Chiefs, but the member of the 25 Greatest Players ever clarified that he is only running the basic elements of that complicated system.

“It’s a system na suitable sa team namin,” Codinera said. “Eksakto lang sa maturity nung players. But you also have to understand yung roles ng bawat isa like yung ginagawa ni Coach Tim. You have to be patient kasi may mga intricacies na basics yung triangle na kailangan.”

According to Codinera, he’s learning the triangle offense by watching Purefoods play on television.

“Pinanonood ko na lang si Coach Tim sa television. Kumukuha ako ng idea. It became so simple sa players kasi akala mo paulit-ulit, akala mo alam mo na. Kailangan itakbo mo siya nang itakbo.”
For Codinera, the system allows each player to work on the opportunities presented by the triangle offense.

“Yung mga players nagagawa nila yung mga tendencies nila within the parameters of the triangle. Hindi naman ako super higpit about this.”
