Bench players Revillosa, Vergara spark La Salle win over UST

De La Salle University showed the importance of its anyone-can-take-charge system after the Lady Archers leaned on two key players off the bench in a tightly-contested 70-63 win over University of Santo Tomas Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym.

Bennette Revillosa and Alyanna Vergara both scored 13 points as the Lady Archers continued to roll in the UAAP Season 78 women’s basketball tournament with a 7-1 record.

Revillosa added 8 rebounds and shot 5-for-11 from the field. Ara Abaca and Camille Claro both scored 11 points and combined for 12 of La Salle’s 23 assists.

Back to back triples by Vergara in the fourth period helped the Lady Archers break a 54-all deadlock as La Salle went on to create much-needed separation, 66-60.

A drive by Claro made it 68-60 although a split from Misaela Larosa and a basket by Jyra Brillante pulled the Tigresses to within 63-68 under the final two minutes.

Jhenn Angeles missed a floater under the final minute although an offensive foul by Fritz Oyao left the door open for UST.

However, the Espana side turned the ball over too, leading to a Revillosa basket in transition which gave La Salle enough breathing room until the buzzer.

UST led by as much as 30-21 in the second quarter before Abaca got going offensively for the Lady Archers, scoring 7 straight to bridge the second and third periods.

Teams went back and forth from that point with Mariell Isanan doing damage underneath for the Tigresses although Claro kept La Salle in the game.

The Lady Archers outscored UST 21-16 in the third quarter to take a slim 47-46 margin before pulling away in the fourth.

Maica Cortes led UST with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Isanan added 12 points although UST was not able to assert its might inside.

UST barely had an advantage in rebounding, 53-51 but were outscored in the paint by La Salle, 38-32. La Salle also drew 42 points from their bench.
