Batang Gilas annihilates Thailand, moves to battle for 5th


Fresh from a loss to Japan in the quarter-finals, Batang Gilas put on an unstoppable display this time to score an 81-46 annihilation of Thailand Friday in the 2015 FIBA Asia U16 Championship in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The win enabled the Philippines to reach the battle for fifth place where it shall battle the winner of the Lebanon-Kuwait match in the other side of the classification phase.

Juan Gerardo Gomez de Liano waxed hot in the second quarter, draining three triples to fire 11 of his game-high 16 points. The Philippines dominated Thailand in the period, 33-9 to erect an insurmountable 56-25 lead by halftime.

The nationals never relented and held fort towards the end for the easy win. The Philippines shot 37.5 percent from three-point area, had 10 more free throws made, and held a 53-37 lead in rebounding.

Batang Gilas also assisted 25 of 28 field goal makes, with John Mark Lagumen dishing out 7 dimes to add to his 4 markers.

Four others scored in twin digits for Batang Gilas, with SJ Belangel, Will Gozum, and Sean Ildefonso combining for 30 points.

Thailand in contrast only shot 27.9 percent overall and 20 percent from beyond the arc, while committing 21 turnovers.
