Arong leads Lancers past visiting Chiefs

After stunning the UAAP champions National University Bulldogs yesterday in a come-from-behind thriller, the UV Lancers notch another victory this time against the Arellano Chiefs, 95-88 to improve to a 2-1 record in Day 3 of the Cebu Leg of PCCL.

From the opening tip, the Lancers got off in a blistering start as they managed to force the Chiefs into lower percentages shots. Ronnie Octobre punched in eight quick points for the Visayan team. The second period showcased an impressive shooting display from Frans Abad as the Lancer poured in 15 of his team’s 17 markers in the quarter. Abad’s two triples propelled UV to take a double digit margin heading into halftime.

An adjusted Arellano team showed up in the third to make it a close game as the NCAA squad opened the second half on an 11-4 run. The momentum would carry the NCAA finals bridesmaid finishers to taste the lead at 51-50. Arong, who did not score in their first game against La Salle, responded with consecutive baskets to stop the drought for UV and to regain the lead.

The Lancer’s triples started fall during the last period to help them pull away against the Chiefs. Abad’s driving layup off a quick cut built their largest lead at 74-61. Arellano’s rally attempts were countered by Arong’s timely baskets and Steve Akomo denied the Chief’s penetrations to the rim.

Despite the win, coach Gary Cortez was not contented with the win. “They were lousy. The boys relaxed and we could have increased our lead.” He shared.
