Anthony seeing better NLEX defense, maturity

Having dropped two games in a row, the NLEX Road Warriors tightened their defense, and it proved to be the difference as the team went back to their winning ways.

The Road Warriors defeated the Meralco Bolts Tuesday, 93-91, to improve to 4-2, picking up two straight wins.

Before NLEX went on a brand new winning streak, the team had lost to Mahindra and Star, where the Road Warriors allowed 113.4 points per 100 possessions.

Head coach Boyet Fernandez shared that his team had gone back to reviewing film to improve their defense.

“We actually [watched] all the tapes especially after our two losses. The things that we did right and kung tutuusin nga ang daming wrongs eh. I teached them to realize it ang gagawin natin to be consistent,” Fernandez said.

“I credit them for realizing na kaya naman pala naming manalo. We are happy ro get this one but it is a long way for us.”

“The number one emphasis was defense,” he said. “The games we won the teams scored around 80. The games we lost they scored 90 to a hundred. So defense was our key and a strong start where we aren’t down by 20.”

The do-it-all forward also lauded how the team bettered their decision-making and saw more offensive contributors, allowing the team to rise to a higher position in the standings.

“It is just consistent play on defense and we played tough defense down the stretch. We had a tough loss against Star and we all said it’s only a loss if we don’t learn from it. We learned form it and we closed out our last two games. I think the maturity is there,” he shared.

“The last two wins, guys are stepping up. We have contributors and both wins had 4 or 5 guys in double figures. We are passing the ball and feeding each other.”

The Road Warriors still have a long way to go, there are signs of progress as they continue to improve in the conference.
