Angeles, Penaflor steer UST past Ateneo in nip-and-tuck battle

Jhenn Angeles and Bettina Penaflor combined for 26 points as the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses edged Ateneo de Manila University in a physical contest, 57-48 Sunday in the UAAP Season 78 women’s basketball tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym.

The two Tigresses took turns in providing the damage for the Espana side to keep the Lady Eagles at bay for their third victory in four games.

Ateneo dropped to 1-3, failing to follow up on their win over University of the Philippines last Thursday.

The Loyola crew did take a 6-1 lead early on but after the Tigresses were able to settle down, the tables turned to their favor.

Back to back hits by Penaflor underneath followed by a triple from Angeles made it 20-12 for the Tigresses, although Ateneo went on to force turnovers, leading to transition baskets for the Lady Eagles.

Mary Moslares and Klarrize Posadas poured 7 as the Lady Eagles pulled to within 2 at halftime, 24-26.

Teams went back and forth in the third quarter, with Maica Cortes and Kristina Deacon both getting baskets around the rim; UST adjusted in the final frame by going on a zone defense, protecting the interior.

On offense, the Tigresses went on high ball screens to lure the defense out. This opened space inside for Cortes, whose back to back buckets from point-blank made it 48-41.

A fastbreak layup by Penaflor made it 52-44 before a drive by Danica Jose pulled Ateneo within 46-52 under the final two minutes.

But it was the closest the losing side could get, as turnovers got in the way even as foul shots by Angeles settled the score.

Penaflor led all scorers with 14 points on 5-for-11 shooting and added 8 rebounds while Angeles had an all-around effort of 12 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists.

Ateneo led in fastbreak points, 15-3 but suffered after committing 30 turnovers, 27 of which were unforced. The team also shot 2-for-20 from three-point area.
