Going five for five is a rare feat for a student-athlete.
The most recent student-athlete to accomplish this was former San Beda Red Lion Kyle Pascual. The current Mahindra Enforcer was part of the San Beda squad that won the NCAA championship from Season 86 to 90.
Baser Amer has the chance to accomplish this feat with a win in Game Three of the NCAA Seniors Basketball Finals on Thursday.
When Tiebreaker Times had a chance to speak with Baser Amer during the SLAM-Under Armour Draft Suite, Tiebreaker Times asked the Smart Elite ambassador what his best moment in his young basketball career was.
Amer’s answer was a surprise, he said none. “Personally, from high school to college, nag champion ako e. Pero if magchampion kami this season yun yung pinakaspecial. Para buong stay namin sa Beda, champion.”
San Beda’s floor general is currently averaging 8.5 markers on 33% shooting from the field. But the impact Amer has made on the floor can be seen in his other statistics. The former Red Cub is averaging six boards and seven dimes in the Finals so far. Moreover, he helped push this series to three games in scoring nine points and 11 boards in San Beda’s Game Two win.
Playing in his final collegiate game on Thursday, Amer just wants to savor the moment. “Do or die na ito. Ang preparation lang namin is just to enjoy this moment,” he said. “Nandito na yung opportunity. Kelangan na lang namin makuha at hindi bitiwan.”
The Smart Elite ambassador though wants to leave Mendiola as one of the winningest Red Lion to ever grace the hard courts. “Nandoon na iyon naka-dalawa ako sa juniors (championship) then may attempt sa pang-lima (sa seniors) for a total of seven,” he reflected. “Sayang kasi dahil nandoon na ang opportunity at gusto ko maging part ng history .”
Moreover, he wants to leave a lasting story that he could tell his children.
“Pagtanda ko at pag mayroon na akong mga anak, gusto ko ma-share sa kanila kung ano ang history ko sa San Beda .”
