Alaska thrashes reigning champion Purefoods with a 20-point blowout


Alaska starts their season strong, as they trounce reigning champions, Purefoods. The Beast , Calvin Abueva scored 21 points on an efficient 8/13 shooting, while James Yap led his team in scoring with 16 points.

Being awarded their championship rings prior to the match, Purefoods started out strong, going on a 7-0 burst to start the first quarter. Alaska maintained their composure, clawing their way into the game to eventually tie the game at 16-all at the end of quarter.

Having finally stabilized, Alaska went on a blitz during the second quarter. Back-to-back baskets from Dondon Hontiveros, and 2 free throws from Calvin Abueva gave Alaska the lead that they never relinquished, 24-18. Eventually, Alaska went on an 8-2 run to end the half, gaining a 14-point lead over the champions, 43-29.

Free throw woes plagued Purefoods all-throughout the half, as they went just 8-19, or 42% from the line.

With a little over four minutes left in the third, Ian Sangalang landed awkwardly on his right knee, with replays showing it buckle under the pressure of his weight. He was escorted to the dugout for check-up.

Midway through the fourth, Alaska’s lead ballooned by as much as 25 after Casio stole an inbound pass for an easy bucket, 64-89. Purefoods never recovered, as they eventually lost, 73-93.
