Air Force pulls away to down IEM

Ranran Abdilla fired a game-high 17 points on 15 attacks to lead the powerhouse Philippine Air Force to a 25-19, 25-27, 25-22, 25-20 win over Instituto Estetico Manila Saturday in the Spikers’ Turf Season 1 Reinforced Conference at the San Juan Arena.

Reyson Fuentes chipped in 12 points including 6 blocks while Jeffrey Malabanan and Ruben Inaudito added 9 points each to help the Airmen escape the Phoenix Volley Masters.

IEM managed to score more hits at 52-43 but were hobbled by a pile of errors throughout the match as they committed 43, 13 more than the Air Force.

Air Force also had a 13-3 lead in blocks as net defense anchored them throughout the contest.

After dropping the opening set 19-25, IEM bounced back and went on an 8-3 start in the second frame. Air Force committed too many errors while Karl Ian Dela Calzada led the offensive charge for the Volley Masters as they took a 19-13 edge.

The Airmen fought back and tied the count at 25 apiece before a spike by Dela Calzada followed by an attack error gave IEM the second set.

But the Airmen bounced back and worked much better in the third and fourth sets, creating cushion while not allowing their counterparts to seize momentum.

Abdilla then took charge in the last two sets to hand Air Force the win.

Dela Calzada topscored for IEM with 14 points while Rudy Gatdula added 11 markers.
