Adamson fends off gritty UP to win women’s basketball opener

Myra Osano scored 7 of her 9 points in the fourth quarter as Adamson University had answers for every University of the Philippines run to win, 62-53 in the UAAP Season 78 women’s basketball tournament Sunday at the Blue Eagle Gym.

Adamson went to big Janille De Castro early on, trying to attack the UP defense. The San Marcelino squad jumped to an early 15-7 lead but behind the bench players of the Lady Maroons, the Diliman side cut the deficit to only 21-22.

Adamson however closed the first half on an 8-0 blast to take a sizable 30-21 edge entering the halftime break.

The UP side went on a sizzling 10-0 run behind 8 straight points from Daez as the team transformed a 25-34 deficit to a 35-34 lead.

A Christine Isip triple later on enabled the Lady Maroons to take a 38-36 advantage but Jonalyn Lacson answered with 6 straight to carry Adamson back on top, 44-38 entering the fourth frame.

Back to back floaters by Osano in between a Bea Daez triple to open the third quarter made it 48-41 for the Lady Falcons, creating a sizable margin after the Lady Maroons threatened to steal momentum.

A three from Osano late in the fourth then made it 56-45, before Daez responded with a long range shot of her own to pull UP within 48-56.

But Adamson made their free throws towards the end of the game to seal the win.

Princess Cochico paced the Lady Falcons with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 2 steals in an all-around effort.

Daez led the Lady Maroons with 18 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists while Isip came off the bench to chip in 10 points.

Adamson dominated the paint, posting a 36-24 lead. UP made it close by winning the rebounding battle, 44-32 and having 8 more second-chance points.
